Everything that Upset the Internet this Week

Congratulations—you made it to the weekend! Chances are, you will be engaging in some sort of social conversation over the next 48 hours. Or maybe you won’t, and that’s totally okay too.

Either way, it’s good to stay informed. The Internet is always buzzing with scandal and controversy, and it’s important to keep up to date if you want to sound pop culture savvy. Plus, engaging in the drama can be super fun.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus announced she has breast cancer

THE STORY: Dreyfus revealed on Thursday that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The Emmy-winning Veep star made the announcement on Twitter, writing, “1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one. The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends,” she added. “The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: The universe sucks for this. A lot. As is the case when anyone (celeb or non-celeb) is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. But the outpouring of support for Dreyfus, from breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate to former IRL Veep Joe Biden, has warmed our cold sad hearts, and it’s inspiring to see the 56-year-old actress immediately shift the conversation to health care and cancer research. How many people find out their sick, and start talking about other sick people? That’s hella selfless.

A makeup artist used blackface

THE STORY: Percem Akin, an Istanbul-based makeup artist, shared a blackface makeup transformation on social media.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: The MUA told Buzzfeed that the post is for a movie character in my country. A film that, apparently, is about “the fucking racism which is rising all around the world.” Akin goes on to defend her transformation tutorial, saying that she is “not living in America or Africa, so finding any black model is so difficult in here. I have never think that this is racist while i am doing this. I just try to see pure beauty behind the pain who have it.” It’s a pretty elaborate excuse — but blackface is never going to be excusable.

An Australian wellness blogger lied about having cancer

THE STORY: Belle Gibson gained fame in Australia after claiming to have beaten brain cancer using natural remedies and nutrition. It’s now been uncovered that the wellness blogger never actually had cancer, and she’s being fined A$ 410,000 for misleading her readers.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Gibson didn’t just build a profitable social media empire on a lie, she endangered others’ lives. She might not have cancer, but the 25-year-old is probably sick: a judge in her court case said Gibson may have “genuinely” believed what she was saying, and might have suffered from “delusions” about her health.

Twitter has a new 280 character limit

THE STORY: Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced on Tuesday that the social platform may soon be converting from a 140-character limit, to a a 280-character limit.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Wasn’t the beauty of Twitter that it forces you to express your ideas concisely? And did we really need to give Trump twice as many characters…
