Overwatch’s Winter Wonderland event returns with new Mei content

It’s beginning to look a lot like seasonal-event time for online games, and Overwatch is showing up with the return of its fan-favorite Winter Wonderland holiday festival. This will once again cover the King’s Row map in snow and holiday decorations, and Blizzard Entertainment has also confirmed that it has given a makeover to the Black Forest map to celebrate the gift-giving holidays.

Like last year’s Winter Wonderland, players can expect a chance to get a number of theme-appropriate legendary skins. For example, Mei and Tracer wear Santa hats and elf clothing. Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan is also promising new legendary skins are coming soon. Events like Winter Wonderland are important to a game like this because they keep players engaged and may convince some players to spend money on microtransactions. This enables Blizzard to keep the game running and profitable even as it gives away characters and maps at no additional charge.

While Winter Wonderland is a revival of last year’s event, Blizzard is bringing some major new additions. You can once again enjoy the Global Snowball Offensive mode that has a team of Meis throwing balls of fresh powder at one another, but you can now play that mode on the Black Forest map as well.

Blizzard is also introducing Mei’s Yeti Hunt. This arcade mode has a team of five Meis taking on a yeti in a boss-fight-like battle. The big thing here is that a player will actually control the yeti, which is a powered up version of Winston. This means that a squad of six players can queue up for Yeti Hunt and take turns playing as the yeti against their friends.

“I know a lot of you are thinking that this sounds kinda silly and kinda ridiculous,” Kaplan said in his video to the Overwatch community. “Well, I’m here to tell you it absolutely is. But the point of some of these seasonal brawls is just to be fun and light and refreshing for a short period of time.”

When the Winter Wonderland event is over, it will take Mei’s Yeti Hunt with it. So this is something you can do for now to mix up your Overwatch action — and then you can start counting down the days until the next Winter Wonderland event.
